On September 20, 2008, the Hip-Hop Association, the Shabazz Center,  BOE Laboratory and the Maurice Ashley Foundation(First and only African-American to attain the coveted title of International Grand Master of Chess in 1999) celebrated a fundraiser for the PS 26 Elementary School chess team in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn to give them a gift of a lifetime, and to honor pioneering photographer, activist, and mentor - Jamel Shabazz for his body of work and altruism. The students were told they were going to receive a $1,000 college scholarship in each of their names for their dedication and hard work. The twelve students became elated when Maurice announced, that courtesy of Hip-Hop, Hollywood Star - WILL SMITH, they were also getting an all-expenses paid trip to the National Grade School Championships held at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida. The kids will fly down early to spend a day at Magic Kingdom before pursuing their dream of competing in a national chess championship. If that wasn't enough to bring out their tears of joy, the students exploded with happiness when they were given laptops loaded with the latest chess software in order to help prepare for the big tournament. One9's chess art pieces and Kasaun's band made it even more magical. It was with great pleasure that I, along with these special parents, artists, and guests, witnessed how chess truly changes lives.  -Martha Diaz Founder Hip-Hop Association
